Preflighting Tutorial

A couple classes ago we packaged up our Speak Mag designs to be sent to press.
I found this tutorial on Computer Arts that shows how to use preflighting to save from costly mistakes, I think that this is something that every designer should know. I wasnt taught about this when I was at OCC for my associates and didnt learn about packaging until I started working there, preflighting before you package up a piece is important because it does show you where the mistakes are hidden.

I was on stumble upon and found some really cool business cards. I know we've looked at some of them before, but I never remember seeing these ones and I thought they were really creative. The last one with the scratch off method is different and interesting. I like the fold in the middle one and the top one is awesome for someone who works with candy or owns their own chocolate shop.

Vaz_Resumes

Found these resumes online and like them because to me they stand out from typical resumes. They have some color, but not too much, and show a little of what that person applying can do creatively.

Student Spotlight from The Dieline

http://www.thedieline.com/blog/2012/3/21/student-spotlight-odin-grooming-essential-kit.html

I thought this was really cool work by a student that was picked up by Odin.

This reminds me of the T-Mobile commercials, which I think a kinda of funny. I found this online in Computer Arts - Inspiration Gallery. Its called "Weight of Technology" and I think its pretty cool. There are a lot of videos and other types of artwork in the Inspiration Gallery that is really kind of cool.

I found this girl's portfolio while researching magazine layouts for our BODUM project we'll be starting. I really like her use of both pages interacting with each other and the use of space, but keeping everything balanced with simple colors.

Jaz Harold

I came across the website of Jaz Harold. I think her photography is interesting because it borders between the lines of reality and fantasy. I like how she combines real people in her photographs with these unrealistic landscapes and design. She also has great drawings, sculpture, and paintings with the same sort of feel. Check her out!

Jordan A - March 15

I found these images here by an artist from Japan. This artist has developed a technique that makes his paintings look like actual fish swimming in the box. There are videos also on that link that are really interesting to watch and see how the artist do it. It is really cool to see it come to life.

Starting your own design studio ...

Sometimes when I'm at work, the Graphics Coordinator that I work with will mention how she has always wanted to start her own design company. She would always talk about how her and a few of her friends had this plan when they were younger. Ive always thought if you really want to do something then do it, if it doesnt workout atleast youve gotten the experience and can learn from your mistakes.
Anyways, I saw this article on the Computer Arts site (which is my go to site, because I love the information and inspiration it provides). Starting your own studio is a lot of work but with the right information, if its something that you really want to do then I say "why not?"

I found Mladen Penev's work on stumble upon. I thought these images were pretty interesting and creepy at the same time. What first caught my eye is the smoke. It took me a minute to see the face that appears in the ashes.

Creative Process

SUPAKITCH & KORALIE - VĂ„RLDSKULTUR MUSEET GĂ–TEBORG from elr°y on Vimeo.

This is a really cool video that captures the creative process of two artists collaborating on a mixed media mural. It is very well done and inspiring to watch if you are feeling a bit lacking in the creativity department.

Chromatic Typewriter

I really love it when something is re-purposed for the sake of art. Typewriters typically create art with words, and I have seen typewriter characters used to create imagery, but this typewriter has had its letter keys replaced with pigments and can create actual paintings by pressing the keys. Very cool.

Jordan A 3/1

I found theses images while searching for inspiration for my logo design. I found theses interesting because they all incorporate the eye into their logo but they are all done differently.

Awesome Site

This is a great site. It features a different artist everyday, while keeping a log of all of the other artists that have been previously featured. The site displays some of the artist's work and has a short bio. There is also a link given to their website. This is a nice reference site and a great collection of artists portfolios.

These are some cool brochures I found that kind of deal with our next project of designing the book for BODUM items. Just some ideas on how to lay the information out or colors.

Why you should question graphic conventions

I found this article really interesting. A few years into my job I was having a hard time sticking with the graphic standards, everything was becoming very monotonous and I felt like I needed a change. I started doing my work based on the standards and then doing a few designs outside of the standards, my boss liked my new designs and I started to rework other jobs. Then last year the Graphics Coordinator and I sat down with our standards manual and scrapped the stuff that wasn't working and made some new rules that we could live by and not feel too restrained.
